The Black Hawk Sanitary Landfill accepts waste generated in the cities and counties within the landfill’s service area. The Black Hawk County Solid Waste Management Commission does not collect any materials and they do not operate any waste hauling vehicles or rent dumpster containers.
Dumpster Containers and Hauling Services for Businesses
Services for garbage, food waste, recycling, and the hauling of other materials must be contracted through a private hauling company or your city (if this service is available).
Garbage
Many private companies provide dumpster containers and hauling services to businesses, as well as to rural residents and individuals for home projects. Look for trash hauling companies listed in the yellow pages of the phone book under “Garbage & Rubbish Collection”.
Some moving companies will assist with removing large or bulky items for a fee. Look in the yellow pages of the phone book under “Movers”.
Recycling
Look for “Recycling Services” in the yellow pages of the phone book. Many trash hauling companies can also provide recycling services to businesses that generate large volumes of cardboard or other recyclable materials.
Many cities also allow businesses with small quantities of recyclables to use their city recycling drop-off stations.
Food Waste and Organics
Put your business’s food waste to work. Donate edible food locally. Contract with a company to haul away your company’s inedible food waste for composting or to generate energy!
Other Materials
Many other companies have routes locally to assist businesses with:
- Proper disposal of business hazardous waste
- Recycling of electronics, tires, and medical sharps
- Reuse and recycling of building materials (asphalt shingles, scrap metal, building materials, bricks, etc.)
Business Waste Reduction Programs
Several statewide programs are dedicated to helping businesses increase their bottom line, while helping to divert business materials from the landfill. Services include working with businesses to reduce the amount of waste produced, finding markets for existing business waste products, improving the efficiency of daily processes, and much more.
