Location: Black Hawk County Landfill, 1401 E. Washburn Road, Waterloo, IA
Status: Full-Time, Exempt
Pay Range: $15.00 - $25.00 per hour, commensurate with qualifications

Position Summary

The Black Hawk County Solid Waste Management Commission is seeking a Scale House Attendant to support daily landfill operations through accurate transaction processing, customer service, and recordkeeping. This position plays a critical role in the landfill's day-to-day operations, serving as the first point of contact for customers and haulers and ensuring transactions are handled safely, accurately, and in accordance with established procedures.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate the scale system to accurately weigh vehicles and record waste transactions
• Collect fees and process payments in accordance with established procedures
• Provide courteous, professional customer service to residents, contractors, and commercial haulers
• Verify loads and communicate with operations staff regarding waste types and disposal requirements
• Maintain accurate daily records, logs, and reports
• Keep the scale house organized, clean, and functional
• Assist with implementing new procedures and improving consistency in scale house operations

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Ability to provide clear, professional customer service
• Basic computer skills and ability to learn scale software and office systems
• Ability to work independently while following established procedures
• Valid driver’s license

Prior experience in a scale house, landfill, or customer service role is preferred but not required.

Work Environment

This position is primarily based inside and outside with regular interaction with customers, drivers, and operations staff. Work involves frequent computer use, communication over radios or intercoms, and awareness of active vehicle traffic and landfill operations.
