Operations and Maintenance Technician

Location: Black Hawk County Landfill, 1401 E. Washburn Road, Waterloo, IA
Status: Full-Time, Exempt
Pay Range: $15.00 - $25.00 per hour, commensurate with qualifications

Position Summary

The Black Hawk County Solid Waste Management Commission is seeking an Operations & Maintenance Technician to support daily landfill operations through equipment operation, facility maintenance, and site support activities. This position is part of a newly structured, in-house operations team and plays a key role in maintaining safe, efficient, and reliable landfill operations. The role is ideal for individuals with hands-on mechanical, maintenance, or operational experience who value consistency, teamwork, and public service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform daily operational and maintenance tasks across the landfill facility
  • Assist with equipment operation, inspections, fueling, and basic preventive maintenance
  • Conduct site maintenance, including housekeeping, drainage upkeep, fencing, and minor repairs
  • Support landfill operations such as cover placement, litter control, and material handling
  • Identify and report equipment or facility issues requiring repair
  • Follow safety procedures and maintain awareness around heavy equipment and vehicle traffic
  • Assist with the implementation of operational procedures and maintenance practices

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in small and medium-sized equipment operation, maintenance, construction, landfill operations, or similar field preferred
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform hands-on work
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Valid driver’s license

CDL or landfill experience is a plus, but not required.

Work Environment

This is a field-based position at an active landfill facility. Work is performed outdoors and around heavy equipment, vehicle traffic, and operational systems.
