Location: Black Hawk County Landfill, 1401 E. Washburn Road, Waterloo, IA
Status: Full-Time, Exempt
Pay Range: $20.00 - $35.00 per hour, commensurate with qualifications
Position Summary
The Black Hawk County Solid Waste Management Commission is seeking an Equipment Operator to operate and maintain heavy landfill equipment in a safety-focused, high-performance landfill environment. This role offers stable employment, modern machinery, and the chance to support essential community infrastructure. The role is ideal for individuals with operational experience who value consistency, teamwork, and public service. Experience in landfill or solid waste operations is preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment, including dozers, compactors, excavators, haul trucks, and loaders
- Perform landfill operations such as grading, compacting, covering, and waste placement
- Conduct daily inspections and complete operator reports
- Perform basic servicing and preventive maintenance
- Direct traffic and assist customers at disposal areas
- Enforce waste screening and regulatory requirements
- Respond to operational emergencies and equipment issues
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- A minimum of 4 years of safe heavy equipment experience
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to detect equipment issues
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Valid Iowa driver’s license
Certifications (or ability to obtain)
- Iowa Landfill Operator Certification (within 6 months)
- CDL Class B with air brakes
- OSHA HAZWOPER Certification (within 12 months)
Work Environment
This is a field-based position at an active landfill facility. Work is performed outdoors around heavy equipment in varying weather conditions. Rotating Saturday shifts and occasional non-standard hours may be required.
