Thanks to an Iowa Department of Natural Resources SWAP Grant, Event Recycling Equipment is now available for loan to use at your next event! Recycling frames, plastic bags, carts and cleaning supplies are provided by the Black Hawk County Solid Waste Management Commission and the Waste Trac Education Team.

The Event Recycling Equipment is available free of charge (with your refundable deposit) for community events in areas that are serviced by the Black Hawk County Landfill. Any group within the following counties (and a few additional cities) are welcome to borrow the recycling equipment: Black Hawk County, Bremer County, Buchanan County, Fayette County, as well as Dike, Grundy Center, Morrison, Reinbeck and Stout.

To get you started on your recycling journey, we have created a brochure and Event Recycling Guide (Coming Soon). To borrow equipment for your event, an application form is now available. Other forms and resources are also available to assist you with planning for recycling at your event. To reserve equipment or for additional information, contact the Waste Trac Education Team at 319-266-8722 (TRAC).

Equipment Available

The event recycling frames can be used to collect plastic bottles, 5 cent deposit containers, and paper.  Interested residents can check out the recycling equipment through the Waste Trac Education Team Office (located at 1500 Bluff Street in Cedar Falls).

The recycling equipment will be loaned on a first-come, first served basis.  Advanced reservations are
required and equipment will be checked out (and returned) on an appointment basis (Monday - Friday only). Delivery of equipment is not available. A refundable deposit check must accompany your application form at least two weeks prior to your event.

During your event, we ask your group to record the amount of material that you are recycling and to fill out the Post-Event Report & Survey.

The following equipment is available for loan, based on the date the deposit is received:


Recycle Clear™ Recycling Frames and Carts can be checked out free of charge in the following quantities (subject to availability) on a first come, first served basis. These frames provide the opportunity for recycing bottles, cans, and paper at your event (when paired with your regular garbage containers).


30 Blue Recycling Frames with Blue Lids
(and Blue Bags)

These frames are labeled “PLASTIC BOTTLES ONLY” to collect water bottles and sports drink bottles.


30 Green Recycling Frames with Green Lids
(and Clear Bags)

These frames are labeled “5¢ DEPOSIT CANS & BOTTLES ONLY” to collect items such as soda/beer cans and soda/beer plastic bottles.

(No Glass 5¢ Deposit Containers)


5 Green Recycling Frames with Green Lids
(and Green Bags)

These frames are labeled “PAPER ONLY” to collect office paper during indoor festivals and workshops.


2 Carts for holding and moving the Recycling Frames
Each cart can hold ten recycling frames, ten lids, and tote full of supplies.
If you plan to use more than 5 frames for your event, use of the carts is strongly encouraged.


Colored and Clear Bags
Color coordinated bags will be provided for use during your event to help volunteers easily keep track of the different materials collected.


2 Cleaning Supply Totes, Buckets, and Forms
When checking out recycling frames, you will also receive a tote that contains the event reports forms, a clipboard, pens, and cleaning supplies. Any unused bags and supplies should be turned in at your scheduled return appointment.

These informational signs can clip on any style of recycling frame. They should be placed in prominent areas of your event or located near the event entrance/exit.

Refundable Damage Deposit

The recycling equipment will be loaned out for free on a first-come, first served basis. Advanced reservations are required. A refundable deposit check must accompany your application form. Iowa Green Meetings and Events Guide
This comprehensive guide (with appendices) was created by the Iowa Recycling Association with funding from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. This guide is designed for planning environmentally friendly events and meetings of all sizes and includes best practice information, checklists, resources, and sample policies.

The go-to website for when you’re not sure where to take a certain item for recycling or reuse.  Just plug in an item and your zip code and let the site find the answer to your disposal dilemma.

Waste Reduction Grants   
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources offers solid waste reduction grants on a quarterly basis through their Solid Waste Alternatives Program (SWAP).  Grants can be used for recycling equipment, collection, workshops, purchase of recycled content products, or salaries related to a project.

2011 Iowa Statewide Waste Characterization Study    
Find out what is actually in Iowa garbage.  This 2011 study discovered that 25.2% of the material headed to Iowa landfills is paper! Plastic comprises another 16.7 %.
